Certified Public Accountant is the legal name of certified accountants in many countries in the English speaking world. It’s typically equivalent to the name of chartered financial accountant in many other English-reading countries. In the United States, the CPA is basically a license to give professional accounting services to the general public. While the profession has become more widely accepted in some other countries including India, China, and Japan, it is still widely regarded as a prestigious profession in the United States.


There are various ways to study to become certified public accountants. One way is through education. Most accountants get their degrees from a university or a college that is accredited by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Other ways to become certified CPA include completing the courses offered by the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) and passing the examination for CPA, which is administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NISTA). Many states also require aspiring accountants to pass the examination administered by the NALA or the AICPA before they can apply for the license.


After getting your degree or certificate from the college or university of your choice, you can start looking for an accounting job. The most common accounting job for CPA is in firms that prepare financial statements or bookkeeping for other companies. For example, a bank will have certified public accountants do the preparation and review of its financial statements and balance sheets. This type of financial statements usually include the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flow along with the internal control panel report.


You must have a four-year undergraduate degree before becoming eligible for the exam. Some states also require some form of financial statement or accounting expertise before you can be licensed. If you wish to take the licensing exam for CPA, you must pass a test that can be taken online or at an authorized testing center. Taking the exam requires immense hard work and dedication so you must be ready for it. Once you passed the test, you will be given the license and designation as certified public accountants.


After becoming licensed, you can work as a Certified Public Accountant either in your own firm or for another company that needs an accountant. Many colleges and universities offer programs on financial statement or accounting basics and you can take up such programs in your campus. There are several institutes that provide training programs on becoming a certified public accountants and most of them have the accreditation status of the National Association of Legal Assistants or the National Institute of Standards and Technology.


If you desire to become a Certified Public Accountant, you must achieve a qualification of at least 150 hours, pass an examination that is approved by the NALA or the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and obtain an associate’s degree from an accredited institution that has been accredited by the NALA. You may also choose to enroll in a program that will help you attain a bachelor’s degree in business administration, but the main consideration is to achieve a certification. This means you should take courses that are approved by the NALA or the AICPA. You can become a certified public accountant by spending time and effort studying the subject matter so that you can pass the examination and acquire the designation.
